By using mixed-language poetry in youth workshops it is possible to raise intercultural awareness by teaching them to respect the values and customs of different cultural groups. Furthermore, apart from the cultural awareness the young people can gain, they can also practice and improve their language skills. But first of all… What is poetry?

Poetry

Poetry, also known as verse, is a type of literature (written work) that uses sounds and images to express feelings and ideas. Someone who writes poetry is called a poet. Poems can paint a picture in our minds. They can also make us feel a certain way. Poetry was originally recited, or spoken aloud, to an audience. There are many different types of poems and the earliest, called epic poems date back thousands of years. An example of an epic poem is Odyssey by Homer.
